In my daily work I use a mixture of lighting from hard source HMI lamps with scrims and bounces, through to traditional source fours, fresnels & LED lamps.
I am a fan of the Arri L 5 & 7 series fresnel lamps as these have great flexibility and coupled with DMX ability & colour control I can use them in multiple applications.
Smaller Dedo LED & Panel lamps for tight space location interviews are also a main-stay.
Beyond small interview setups I like to integrate a DMX lighting control desk. This gives productions a faster & less intrusive manipulation in light changes & responds to environmental & scene changes.
With the advances in camera sensitivity, increased colour space, bit depth, HDR and log curve manipulation filmmakers and lighting directors really can embrace the idea of less is more.
I do love a Jem ball, not purely because of the soft wrapping light it emits, but the fact that I can swap out the bulb to various wattages and can even slip in a LED corn lamp. This allows the colour temperature to be shifted without filters but also reduces heat, reducing my works carbon footprint.
My lighting style is continually evolving in response to technical developements of luminaires, LED technology, camera sensitivity & resolution. But the fundamentals of portrait composition have always been the starting point.
I always approach each project with the notion of what best suits the genre, the emotional narrative and the subject.
Even when only a single lamp is used, its placement, intensity and colour is key in drawing the viewers attention and manipulating their emotional response.
